Fundraising
Why does SARDA IOM need money?
The two search dogs currently active in the organisation are funded by their handlers for basic food and medical expenses. Any money raised by SARDA allows the dogs and handlers to train with SARDA Wales. Specialised equipment and clothing (for dogs and handlers) is required enabling teams to search for long periods of time in all weather conditions.
A typical training weekend in Snowdonia entails:
Leave the Isle of Man for Heysham on Friday evening
Travel down in a vehicle to Snowdonia arriving at 3.00am Saturday
Wake, eat breakfast and commence training at 9.00am for the day
Saturday evening often involves a talk on search and rescue techniques
Sunday further training exercises in all terrains (mountain, forest, coastal, urban)
Travel to catch the boat from Heysham Monday morning 2.00am
Arrive back in the island 6.00am Monday and straight to work.
As this shows the training is very intensive and tiring. A typical weekend will cost the handler over £150 less any SARDA contribution to the ferry fare. There is a continuing financial commitment on the handler as each dog needs to attend at least 4 training weekends each year, in addition to regular re-assessments once qualified.
As SARDA IOM has already proven we are a life saving organisation and greatly appreciate the publics support in both time and finanical contributions.
